Some players run into issues when it comes to getting Black Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered , even if they don't actually need the gems and simply want them for fun. Part of this is because timing is important when making Black Soul Gems, and the other part that makes it difficult is that the game doesn't give you a lot to work with in terms of instructions, which is true throughout the game and not limited to getting Black Soul Gems.
While Black Soul Gems are part of the Necromancy quests for the Mages Guild , you can create them without doing any quests as long as you have the materials and necessary spell, Soul Trap.
How to Get Black Soul Gems

Creating a Black Soul Gem requires a Grand Soul Gem and a way to cast Soul Trap. From here, you can follow this set of instructions to turn your Grand Soul Gem into a Black Soul Gem:
- Head to Dark Fissure, Fort Istirus, Fort Linchal, or Wendelbek. Each of these locations will have an altar with red cloth outside of them, and it doesn't matter which location you decide to use, as the result will be the same.
- Wait for the purple light of the Shade of the Revenant to interact with the altar. The Shade of the Revenant occurs every eight days in-game , starting from the first day. So, Day 1 is the first Shade of the Revenant, then Day 9, Day 17, Day 25, and so on.
- Place your Grand Souls Gems in the altar, which acts like a storage object when you interact with it. You can place more than one in the altar.
- Cast Soul Trap on the altar. Soul Trap turns one Grand Soul Gem into a Black Soul Gem at a time , so you need to cast it for as many gems as you have placed in the altar.
- Collect your Black Soul Gems.
If you plan on completing the Vampire Cure quest, keep in mind that you need five Grand Soul Gems for it, so you won't want to turn all of them into Black Soul Gems. From here, you can use the Black Soul Gems to trap humanoid souls, which isn't possible with regular soul gems, and then use them for Enchanting purposes in Oblivion Remastered.
