Coinciding with Destiny 2 latest Rite of the Nine event is Heavy Metal, a PvP-focused activity where players commandeer some of Destiny 2's most iconic vehicles against one another in 3v3 combat. Destroy some vehicles, complete challenges, and claim some unique rewards.

Playing this event will award you with tons of upgrade materials, weapon drops, and even a new vehicle type. If you're a fan of Sparrows but always wanted them to pack some more firepower, you'll want to play this short-term event before it ends. Let's go over how this event works, how to complete the Path of Demolition quest, and quickly go over the rewards in this event.

What Is Heavy Metal?

Heavy Metal is a PvP event that runs from May 9 to May 16 , adding a new vehicle-focused PvP game mode to the Crucible. This activity is a casual 3v3 playlist that pits players against each other in vehicular combat, featuring Cabal Drake tanks and Fallen Brig mechs. Players only take control of these vehicles; there isn't any infantry combat in this playlist.

Completing Heavy Metal matches will progress a unique event Battle Pass, featuring exclusive rewards and a new vehicle type. This is Destiny 2's first take on a free-to-play event pass, so its reward track is slightly different from past events. Before we dig into how it's changed from previous seasonal events, let's first cover how the new Heavy Metal game mode works.

Heavy Metal: Supremacy

Heavy Metal is a 3v3 PvP mode where players fight one another with Drakes and Brigs . You will be randomly placed into a team that will assign you either vehicle type. Drakes fight alongside other Drakes; Brigs fight with Brigs. Your goal is to destroy the enemy team and claim their dropped tokens. Kills and tokens are worth one point. If you kill the top performer on the enemy team, you'll receive three points instead.

Picking up a token will heal your vehicle. This is the only way to restore HP in this game mode.

Both vehicles have the same control scheme and projectile-based weaponry. You lack defensive abilities or passive healing sources, so stick to cover and lead your shots.

  • Fire: Shoot your vehicle's primary cannon. Has a two-second cooldown between shots.
  • Secondary Fire: Drakes launch a volley of projectiles that lock onto targets. Brigs fire a hard-hitting missile.
  • Melee: Dodge where you're currently moving. Drakes gain a speed boost; Brigs dash laterally.

Path Of Demolition Quest

To start this event, you'll need to visit Shaxx in the Tower and pick up the "Path of Demolition" quest. This will give you a general overview of the event and explain how to progress the event reward track. The quest is broken up into eight steps:

  1. Complete a game of Heavy Metal
  2. Claim a reward from the event reward track.
  3. Complete and claim a daily challenge.
  4. Reroll a daily challenge.
  5. Speak to Shaxx.
  6. Earn Heavy Metal Tokens.
  7. Purchase a reward from the reward shop.
  8. Speak with Shaxx.

Daily Challenges

You can view this event's challenges under the "Quests" tab of the inventory menu. In this menu, you can view your current Daily Challenges and Weekly Challenges. You may have up to three Daily Challenges at a time. Each challenge you complete will award Event Tokens , which can be used to purchase rewards from Heavy Metal's in-game reward shop.

Once you've completed all of your Daily Challenges, you have two options:

  1. Wait for the daily reset to get another set of challenges.
  2. Spend Reroll Chips to get new challenges.

Reroll Chips are acquired through the event reward track. You can spend one chip to reroll a challenge to something else. We highly recommend you only reroll challenges you've already completed to earn as many Event Tokens as possible.

Event Tokens And Rewards

Now that you have a stockpile of Event Tokens, you can head to the Reward Shop in the Heavy Metal UI to claim your rewards. Tokens may be exchanged for crafting materials, Heavy Metal Engrams, and Exotic Ciphers . There's no limit to how many items you can purchase from the reward shop. So long as you have tokens, you can purchase any reward.

The main chase of this reward is The Gryphon, a new type of vehicle that is unlocked upon completing the reward pass. This is a slower take on a Sparrow with mounted weapons, allowing you to blast enemies while in the comfort of a floating vehicle. If you miss this event, we're unsure when The Gryphon will become ontainable again.
