CSFD warns against viral TikTok Chromebook challenge emerging in Colorado Springs schools

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is warning against a viral TikTok Chromebook challenge.

In the challenge, students put a piece of metal or pencil lead into a Chromebook's charging port, causing the device to spark, smoke or catch fire.

CSFD says this challenge poses serious safety risks, including fires, battery explosions and the release of toxic fumes. If the Lithium-Ion batteries located in the Chromebooks catch fire, CSFD says they can be "exceedingly difficult" to extinguish.

CSFD has reportedly been contacted by several school districts in the Pikes Peak Region to report these incidents. As of Friday, there have been at least 16 local instances where this trend has taken place.

Multiple students involved in these incidents have been required to go through the CSFD Youth Firesetter Intervention Program for safety awareness.

The incidents have stayed relatively minor and have not required crews to respond, CSFD said.

CSFD encourages parents to have a conversation with their children about the dangers of tampering with any electronic device.

CSFD is reportedly working with local school districts as well as School Resource Officers to ensure they are well-versed on the challenge and follow the correct protocol in handling the situation.
